Information about project

  • The “Bottom-of-the-Barrel with a delayed coking technology” Project is an investment of capital within the second stage of the Pančevo Refinery modernisation. By the same token, this is one of Serbia’s greatest investments that has been announced to be completed within the next few years, as it will be funded with more than 300 million euros
  • The completion of new capacities for processing in NIS Refinery will rank the company among East Europe’s most modern ones
  • The principal project designer and the “Bottom-of-the-Barrel” Project Manager is an internationally acclaimed CB&I Company
  • Q 3 2019 will see the start of commercial production within the “Bottom-of-the-Barrel”
  • The completion of project along shall increase the refining depth to 99,2% from the current 86% , which practically means the cesation of the output of high-sulfur-content fuel oil, along with the increased output of high-quality petrol and diesel, as well as liquefied petroleum gas
  • The new facility will enable the Pančevo Refinery to enrich its product range with coke, up to now imported into Serbia
  • The pivotal environmental aspect of the “Bottom-of-the-Barrel” Project is the cesation of the output of high-sulfur-content fuel oil, so Serbia’s market will no longer have fuel, whose combustion releases significant amount of sulfur compounds into the atmosphere; other than that, the emissions of powdery substanceswill also be reduced, along with the increased Refinery’s energy efficiency
  • The Project completion strategy stipulates preferential status for local construction companies, which will positively affect an increased engagement of local workforce

Business Impact of the Bottom-of-the-Barrel

The NIS Company’s continued Pančevo Refinery modernisation brings about Serbia’s energy stability by European quality fuel output. The completion of the project “Bottom-of-the-Barrel” shall enable NIS to continue the trend of constant innovation and improvement of its facilities and processes with a view to ensure a steady supply of high-quality fuel, as well as introducing new clean technologies. Once complete and put into operation in Q 3 2019, the new facility is to bring about an optimum payload of the Refinery’s capacities, along with an increased crude oil refining efficiency in NIS from the current 86 per cent to 99,2 per cent. The new facility capacity is 2.000 tons per day. Once put into operation, the new facility will bring about increased output of high-quality petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas, as well as the start of producing coke, up to now imported. Other than that, the completion of the “Bottom-of-the-Barrel” project will ensure Serbia’s honouring its obligations for reducing the sulfur content in certain types of fuel. The Project completion strategy stipulates preferential status for local construction companies, which will positively affect an increased engagement of local workforce.

Project’s Environmental Benefits

The pivotal environmental aspect of the “Bottom-of-the-Barrel” Project is the cesation of the output of high-sulfur-content fuel oil, so Serbia’s market will no longer have fuel, whose combustion releases significant amount of sulfur compounds into the atmosphere. So, thanks to the “Bottom-of-the-Barrel” Project, the entire region’s ecological status will be improved. Other than that, Serbia will meet the request by Europe’s Energy Community to reduce the consumption of fuel with the high sulfur content. As for the coke output technology, state-of-the-art solutions are in play with a view to ensure high care of environment and minimum energy resources consumption. The completion of the new facility will also boost Refinery’s energy efficiency.

A ceremony held at the Pančevo Refinery on 23rd October 2017 marked the start of works at the “Bottom-of-the-Barrel” Project. More about the event here.
