The First Science and Crafts Workshop in Serbia Opens with the Support of NIS

As a company that relies on innovation and application of modern technologies in all business segments, NIS supported the opening of a Makerspace - the first science and crafts workshop in our country.

The opening of a Makerspace – first science and crafts workshop in our country.

Makerspaces are laboratories equipped with modern tools such as 3D printers and scanners, laser cutters, CNC machines, soldering irons where visitors and members of the Centre for the Promotion of Science will be able to turn their creative ideas into action with the help of experts and organised training. At the same time, such spaces are intended for pupils, students, scientists, innovators, artists, craftsmen and all others who have creative ideas and who want to share their knowledge with others. This is the first modern laboratory of this type in our country and is a kind of a knowledge and technology incubator of the 21st century.

NIS recognised the significance of this project and supported it within its corporate programme Together for the Community with the aim of contributing to the spread of digital literacy in our country and the sharing of knowledge and experience in the field of modern technologies, as well as to the popularisation of science and scientific literacy in Serbia.

The Makerspace is a part of the Centre for the Promotion of Science which is an open laboratory for all creative individuals who are looking for a place to put their ideas into action.

The opening ceremony of this modernly equipped space, located in the Science Club of the Centre for the Promotion of Science in Belgrade, was attended by Mladen Šarčević, Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development, Vadim Smirnov, NIS Deputy CEO and Director of Public Relations and Communications, Andreja Mladenović, Deputy Mayor of Belgrade and Jovan Trifunović, Acting Director of the Centre for the Promotion of Science.

Mladen Šarčević, Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development of Serbia expressed his gratitude to NIS and the city of Belgrade for the implementation of this project. “NIS has already become widely known for its investments in science and education through its programme Energy of Knowledge. However, there are also other projects that we have jointly implemented so far. We work together in the area of dual education, but also in all other aspects. I would like to thank the Director of the Centre for the Promotion of Science for launching such a workshop, which is now available to all citizens of Serbia interested in science,” said Minister Šarčević.

With over 130 square meters of space, members of the Makerspace have at their disposal technical material, tools, workspace, computers, expert help and advice from colleagues with whom they can develop their projects – from an idea to a finished prototype.

Vadim Smirnov, NIS Deputy CEO and Director of Public Relations and Communications, said, “In its day-to-day business NIS relies on new technologies and new ideas. We are particularly pleased because all young people, scientists and innovators will be able to put their ideas into practice in this space. I would like to emphasise that we are very happy that NIS has had such a good cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development and the City of Belgrade which has grown into a strategic partnership. NIS is a socially responsible company and through the implementation of this project, which we supported within the framework of the Together for the Community programme, we wish to contribute to the improvement of the entire community. Finally, I would like to wish all the users of this space a lot of success in their work and many creative ideas that will be translated into concrete actions here.”

Andreja Mladenović, Deputy Mayor of the city of Belgrade, stated, “It is a great pleasure for me to be able to address you on behalf of the city of Belgrade and to recall that the programme Together for the Community is a programme that NIS has been implementing together with local self-governments in several cities in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The city of Belgrade has been involved in this programme for several years now and we are extremely pleased with the manner in which this cooperation has been taking place. This space will give a chance to a large number of talented people with ideas to put them into effect. We expect a lot of things from this project and this space, we will certainly continue the cooperation with NIS and we are convinced that the Together for the Community will generate many more large and excellent projects that will be our city and Serbia’s pride and joy.”

“With the financial assistance of NIS, through the Together for the Community public competition, as well as with the help of the City of Belgrade and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, today we are opening the first laboratory of this kind in Serbia. It is generally known that ideas have great value and that any society that wants to be advanced needs to work on their implementation. The Makerspace is designed to be a place where creators can turn their ideas into something real. I hope that this space will be just the first one in a row, a kind of an incubator of innovation,” said Jovan Trifunović, Acting Director of the Centre for the Promotion of Science.

In accordance with its corporate slogan Future at Work, NIS has been cooperating with 11 local communities in Serbia for nine years now and improving the work of scientific and educational institutions, cultural and sports institutions, in order to improve the quality of life of citizens in these communities. So far, more than 900 projects have been supported, contributing to the social and economic development of municipalities and cities, an investment worth over one billion dinars.

The Makerspace is a part of the Centre for the Promotion of Science which is an open laboratory for all creative individuals who are looking for a place to put their ideas into action. With over 130 square meters of space, members of the Makerspace have at their disposal technical material, tools, workspace, computers, expert help and advice from colleagues with whom they can develop their projects – from an idea to a finished prototype.
