Young Physicists Win Four Medals with NIS Support

Young physicists have returned from the 45th International Physics Olympiad held 13-21 July in Astana, Kazakhstan, having won four medals and a Certificate of Commendation.

The gifted secondary school students travelled to the most prestigious physics competition with sponsorship from NIS, which had provided a considerable portion of the funds required for our team’s travel to the international Olympiad, through its Energy of Knowledge project.

The silver medal went to Uroš Ristivojević from the Belgrade Mathematical Grammar School, while Mihailo Đorđević and Luka Bojović, also from the Belgrade Mathematical Grammar School, and Jovan Jovanović from the 13th Belgrade Grammar School returned from Kazakhstan with bronze medals. The Certificate of Commendation was presented to Janko Šusteršič from the First Kragujevac Grammar School.

“We are proud of the awards that our students won. They were excellent, and the tests were certainly the most difficult in the history of this competition. Yet they managed quite well, which means that they were fully prepared. We have previously had financial problems regarding our travels to international Olympiads, but NIS has been helping us a lot recently and we are very satisfied with our cooperation with this company,” said Mićo Mitrović, Pd.D., a professor at the Faculty of Physics and Chairman of the Competition Committee of the Serbian Physical Society, who accompanied our team in Kazakhstan.

On their return to Belgrade, at the Nikola Tesla Airport the physicists stated that the tasks had been particularly difficult, yet they had given their best, which had finally given results.

“The competition was very difficult and to my knowledge, these have been the hardest tasks in an Olympiad ever. Yet, as always, the Serbian team had done the test well and we are satisfied. I am a fourth-grade student of the Mathematical Grammar School and I have already enrolled at the Faculty of Physics in Belgrade,” says Uroš Ristivojević, the winner of the silver medal.

This is the second consecutive year that NIS has sponsored national Olympiads in mathematics, physics and chemistry. Together with the Serbian Physical Society, Serbian Mathematical Society and Serbian Chemical Society, NIS has also provided sponsorship to our teams participating in international Olympiads.
